Australian farmed barramundi meets the highest international food safety standards, delivering consumers a great tasting, healthy product, from farm to table.

This has been one of ABFA’s key objectives.  By working to ensure a consistent, quality product is supplied from its members, the ABFA builds the brand of Australian farmed barramundi and increases consumer confidence and desire in the product. 

ABFA developed the Post Harvest Handling Code of Practice in 1998, which is complemented by the Standards and Product Specifications Project. 

The ABFA Post Harvest Handling Code of Practice is a set of guidelines developed to ensure consumers consistently receive the very best quality Australian farmed barramundi.  

The ABFA Quality Standards and Product Specifications Project created a set of standards, which ensures consumers can be confident of a consistent Australian farmed barramundi product across the industry.  It incorporates standards and specifications for size, grading, fish condition, flavour, packing and labelling of fresh whole fish.  They do not incorporate fish colour and do not cover processed fish, fillets or frozen product. 

These documents are available to members as downloadable files, in the members’ section of the site.

All state and commonwealth food safety and animal welfare requirements are met during the rearing, harvesting, chilling, packing and transport of all packs or bulk shipments of ABFA members’ products.

Independent research, conducted by the South Australian Research and Development Institute, who have a Deed of Agreement with the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) to run residue control on the export of Australian seafood into European Union (EU) markets, found no chemical residues or contaminants in any samples collected randomly on ABFA member farms in 2007.  This is an ongoing program that will continue to ensure product from ABFA members meets the world’s most stringent requirements.

These results confirm that consumers can be 100% confident that Australian farmed barramundi from ABFA members meets the world’s highest standards for quality and safety.
